12.   Q. I Am Considering or Have Had Traditional Acupuncture Treatments.

How is IMS Different, and Why Can I Expect a Better Result?

A: It is critical to first properly diagnosis that the patient has a shortened muscle syndrome by medical examination. IMS is based on a neuro-anatomic model, whereas traditional acupuncture is based on an alternative system of diagnosis and therapy. As such, the location of pin placement in IMS is guided by different criteria, and equally significant, IMS pin manipulation is purposefully and uniquely intended to stimulate specific spinal reflexes. While acupuncture may provide benefit to patients with neuropathic-myofascial pain syndromes, it may not have fully treated the muscle contractures responsible for ongoing pain. Indeed, a previously positive, if even short term benefit from acupuncture likely confirms that the patient is suffering from a neuropathic-myofascial pain syndrome that may respond to IMS.
