1. Q. What is IMS?
A. Dr. C.C. Gunn developed the IntraMuscular Stimulation treatment model, a safe and effective technique for treating 'the shortened muscle syndrome', in the 1970's. He has been lecturing on and teaching the technique to physicians around the world since that time. He has been recognized by the leading scientific organizations in the field of pain for his contributions in this area, and is an Associate Clinical Professor @ UW where Dr. Goodman first heard him lecture and began studying with him in 1993.
Following a thorough medical examination of the patient, the problem areas are identified and a very fine flexible pin is used to release muscle contractures which constitute the source of the pain. Typically, weekly sessions progressively lead to both signs of objective physical improvement as well as decreased symptoms. Treatment is provided on an outpatient basis and is complimented with a home stretching program and lifestyle modification. The number of sessions is dictated by the severity of the problem as identified by the history and physical examination. The response to treatment depends upon multiple factors including the overall health of the patient and any post-surgical scarring present.
"The important thing in science is not so much to obtain new facts as to discover new ways of thinking about them."
