Dr. Gunn and Dr. Goodman
Drs. Gunn, Goodman & David Kim
IMS Instructors Meeting 2/2004
Steven R. Goodman M.D. attended the University of Washington and is Board Certified in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation. He has been practicing for 17 years, specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal and soft tissue/myofascial pain problems. While associating with an Orthopaedic Surgery group for 12 years he gained extensive experience in the management of nerve and muscle injuries, and as such is knowledgeable in the various evaluative and therapeutic options available to patients with these problems. These might, when indicated, include referral for specialized electrodiagnostic testing (EMG), imaging tests such as MRI, diagnostic/therapeutic injections (epidural, nerve root, facet, discogram), and/or surgical consultation. He is Board Certified as well in Electrodiagnostic Medicine (EMG/Nerve Conduction Studies) and is a member of IASP, the world's leading scientific professional organization dedicated to advancing knowledge in the understanding and treatment of pain.

Additionally, he has developed a special interest in scientifically based alternatives for the treatment of musculoskeletal pain syndromes. Over the past 10 years he has accumulated expertise in a unique therapy for soft tissue musculoskeletal pain that, while similar to acupuncture, is grounded in a Western neurological-anatomic approach. The treatment is called IntraMuscular Stimulation (IMS), which was developed by Dr. C.C. Gunn, who Dr. Goodman has studied under directly and extensively during the past decade. Dr. Goodman is on the Advisory Board of ISTOP, the Institute for the Study and Treatment of Pain, a non-profit foundation in Vancouver, Canada whose sole mission is to advance this treatment model worldwide. He is a certified IMS instructor, has lectured frequently on this topic, and is actively engaged in teaching this therapeutic model to other physicians around the world. Dr. Goodman is also a former Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Washington Multidisciplinary Pain Center, where he taught resident physicians and post-graduate fellows the IMS treatment model. A complete and thorough explanation of IMS can be found at the ISTOP website: www.istop.org where Dr. Goodman is listed as a certified IMS practitioner/instructor. Please go to Dr. Goodman's CREDENTIALS to view his Curriculum Vitae, Diplomas and Board Certifications.

Significantly, Dr. Goodman has also benefited from IMS as a patient himself, and so has an intimate understanding of its value from 'both sides of the needle'. He has also had the opportunity to study directly under several other recognized leading authorities in myofascial pain, a generally under-appreciated and prevalent cause of pain and disability.

In addition to IASP and ISTOP, Dr. Goodman is a member of the American Board of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, the American Board of Electrodiagnostic Medicine, the King County Medical Society, the National Pain Education Council, the National Foundation for The Treatment of Pain, and the International Society of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine.
